OVERVIEW

A Referee is a person who officiate games or competitions. You will find referees in professional sports organizations, schools or community sports organizations.

Referees might be used in such games and sporting competitions as swimming, baseball, chess, basketball, tennis, football, rugby, boxing, volleyball or soccer among many other sports.

JOB DESCRIPTIONcareer as a referee

  1. Officiating games between two opposing teams, individuals
  2. Explain and enforce rules of the game
  3. Signal the start and end of a sport or game
  4. Assess penalties
  5. Inspect sports equipment to make sure it complies with the rules of the game.
  6. Promotes leagues and organizations.
  7. Judge performances in sporting competitions in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and
  8. determine results.
  9. Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition
  10. Verify scoring calculations before competition winners are announced
  11. Report to regulating organizations regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed such as fines or other disciplinary actions.
  12. Confer with other sporting officials, coaches, players, and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

Anyone can be a referee.

TRAINING | COACHING | STUDY REQUIREMENTS

You need to be knowledgeable about the sport you are a referee for and depending on the nature of the game, the following will apply;

  1. Whistle
  2. Referee sports attire and footwear
  3. Timing device i.e stop watch
  4. Card set with game record
  5. Stationery for recording game outcomes
  6. Training as a referee
